This is the very ambitious attempt to get almost everything in Alnwick down in photos, or in other pictures.


The Lion Column -- contrary to popular myth, the Duke at the time of its construction had to pay for the final completion costs himself, since the over-ambitious tenants (who had intended to ingratiate themselves with this monument) ran out of money !

It has been suggested that the four recumbent Coade stone lions around the base may have inspired Landseer's lions at the foot of Nelson's Column !

A curiosity about the Column is that it has a cavity that contains a hermetically-sealed glass tube with the regimental roll of the Percy Tenantry Volunteers on vellum, along with several period medals.
